The Start

A streaking meteor

Slashes across the Milky Way

As I lie on my back

In the gentle grass

Of the mountain meadow.

I rise with the Pleiades

To descend the starlit path.

My approach triggers

A stammer of cloven hooves,

And a deer staggers

To her feet with a start

In the utter darkness.

With hearts racing

And nerves tingling,

We retreat

From one another,

Surprised by the sudden

Shadowy intrusion

Upon our midnight reveries.
